Our history

We didn’t get where we are today without hard work. The creation of the modern practice dates back to 1972, when the local firm Tony Petty & Associates, which subsequently merged with Knight Frank, was established. Today the firm is the leading owner operated real estate consultancy practice in Greater China, covering the residential and commercial markets.

Significant dates in Knight Frank's history:

1896 Knight Frank & Rutley is founded as a valuation and auction business in London.

1910 Knight Frank moves its global headquarters to Hanover Square.

1922 Knight Frank sells Sir Winston Churchill’s house for him – and promptly sells him back a new one!

1983 Knight Frank & Rutley joins with a leading Hong Kong surveyor to form Knight Frank Kan and Baillieu.

2006 Knight Frank merges with Chesterton Petty and begins expansion to Mainland China.

2006 Knight Frank forms a partnership with New York based Newmark, forming Newmark Knight Frank to provide corporate advisory and tenant solutions worldwide.

2008 98 years after leaving Hanover Square times are changing – Knight Frank moves to global headquarters Baker Street, relocating more than 850 staff to an open plan 100,000 sq ft office.

2013 Knight Frank operates from 244 worldwide offices in 43 countries on six continents and employs more than 7,000 staff worldwide.
